The Water 101 Guide: What’s Safe for Bettas?
Share:
Not all water is created equal, especially when it comes to your Betta. Whether you’re filling up a new tank or topping off your current setup, knowing what kind of water to use (and how to prepare it) is essential for keeping your Betta healthy and stress-free. Here’s a breakdown of the most common water sources, and what you need to do to make each one Betta-safe.
Tap water is totally fine to use, as long as you prep it right. Untreated tap water usually contains chlorine, chloramine, and sometimes heavy metals that are harmful to fish. Always use a water conditioner like Seachem Prime before adding tap water to your tank to neutralize these nasties.
SPRING WATER
Spring water can also work well, but don’t skip the testing. It may contain minerals or have fluctuating pH levels. Just like tap water, it’s a good idea to treat it with a water conditioner.
RO/DI (REVERS OBMOSIS/DEIONIZED)WATER
This ultra-pure water is stripped of everything—including the good stuff. You’ll need to remineralize it before use with products like Seachem Replenish. Without added minerals, Betta health can suffer.
DISTILLED WATER
Distilled water is similar to RO/DI in that it’s completely pure and must be remineralized. Use the same precautions and be sure to test pH and hardness.
